Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. When her father passed away as a carnival barker, when Ruth was just an infant and she was forced to keep the family going by working as a maid and server. Ruth lived in the poor tenement district in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. However, she was only in the school for two years, before going on to pursue an acting profession. Her path to success turned out be fraught with difficulties: In New York, she obtained an opportunity to pose for stills for a crime magazine However, the stage was not a match for her. Then in NYC, she was employed at a bar, as a check-in girl before quitting and moving back to Boston. In the New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as a regular actor. The company paid her doing shifts during the day, in the ushering department. She graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
